0908.487 and 0908.587 – Design of Masonry and Timber Structures

Prerequisites:   Statics and Solid Mechanics; another more advanced structural analysis or design course

 

Meeting Times: M 6:30 to 9:00, Rowan Hall 104

 

Objective: The course deals with design topics in unreinforced and reinforced masonry structures and wood structures.

 

Upon completion of the course, you will be able to do the following:

 

Optional Textbooks:    Design of Wood Structures, 5th Edition, 2003, Breyer.

                        Design of Reinforced Masonry Structures, 2001, Taly.

 

Design Codes (reqd):    ASD Manual and National Design Specification for Wood Construction, American Forest and Paper Association, 2001. (available from American Wood Council at student price of $35 plus shipping)

                                   

                                    ACI 530-02/ASCE 5-02/TNS 402-02, Building Code Requirements for Masonry Structures/Specification for Masonry Structures and Commentaries.

Course Grading:           Exam 1 ‑ 40%

Exam 2 ‑ 40%

Homework and In-Class Assignments– 20% (graduate students: research paper 8% and homework 12%)


HOMEWORK SOLUTIONS

 

Class Policies: Attendance is expected at all class meetings.  If you will not be able to attend a class you should inform the instructor beforehand in order to obtain assignments, etc.  Make-up exams will not be given except under extreme circumstances.  Each student is responsible for every homework assignment.  You are encouraged to form study groups for test preparation but homework assignments are supposed to be individual efforts.
