Course Description

This course will provide an overview of instructional planning for teaching students with special needs. It will focus on IEP development, classroom organization and management, curriculum-based measurement, task analysis and lesson plan design for teaching students with disabilities.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course participants will be able to:

conduct instruction and professional activities consistent with the requirements of law, rules and regulations, and local district policies and procedures;

develop curriculum-based assessment for students with learning problems;

interpret and incorporate information from assessments into Individualized Educational Programs (IEP) objectives;

understand different learning characteristics of students with special needs and adapt curriculum construction and teaching methods for students with disabilities;

prepare appropriate lesson plans, and organize instructional materials and classroom activities;

design learning environment that can encourage active participation by learners in a variety of individual and group learning activities;

select and adapt instructional strategies and materials appropriate to the learning styles of students with disabilities; employ adaptive equipment, materials, and technology to support instruction;

employ behavioral principles to support the acquisition, application and generalization of learning; employ task and concept analysis in individual instruction

understand importance and benefits of communication and collaboration that promote interaction with students, parents, school and community personnel;

evaluate both instructional sequences and overall program effectiveness of school programs serving exceptional learners.

Readings

Reading materials will be delivered at class.

Requirements

Specific requirement of each assignment will be discussed and handouts will be delivered at class.

Exams: There are two exams. Each exam will be worth 50 points.

Class Participation: Be on time and active to participate in class discussion and group activities. It will be worth 5 points as a bonus.
