Welcome to my professional webpage! My name is Jessica Bloom and I am from the small beach town of Point Pleasant. I will be graduating this spring, 2009 with a degree in Elementary Education and Writing Arts. I will also have a minor in Spanish. Ideally, I would like to teach 4th or 5th grade students. One aspect of my educational philosophy can be described by Existentialism, which stresses the importance of the individual and emotional commitment to living authentically. It is important for students to make their own choices, for students define who they are by the choices they make in life. Second, Progressivism focuses on the child rather than the subject matter. In addition, it says schools should help students develop personal and social values. It teaches them to be sociable and outgoing when they have interviews and other things. Along with Progressivism, Essentialism is important. This philosophy says that students should be taught discipline, hard work, and respect to authority. This ties in with Progressivism in that it teaches students to be prepared for the “real world.”
When I am not in the classroom inspiring and positively impacting students’ lives, I hope to be traveling to Spanish-speaking countries teaching English. Not only do I love to travel, I love the Spanish language and culture. I also enjoy the beach, movies, and shopping. While teaching, I hope to create a learning community where students feel open and welcomed to share ideas, take risks in being creative, and thrive in an educational environment.
