Sport Officials Dance

Background: This dance uses different sport official signals as the movements for the dance.

Grade Level: 3-12

Equipment: Handout of sport official signals for any sport. Football, baseball, basketball, softball among others

Formation: Single circle or random

Movements: Students use locomotor and nonlocomotor movements based on the signal action

Description
:

The teacher distributes the official signals handout to each student and asks a student to select one of the signals.  The students are asked to look at the selected signal and then transform the signal from the paper into a movement. For example the Football touchdown signal is two hands in the air, the movement would be raising two hands up above the head.

The movement is repeated four times to establish a movement phrase.  For example, the touchdown movement (raising the arms up and down)  is repeated four times consecutively.
A second signal is selected, transformed into a movement and repeated four times.
A third signal is selected, transformed into a movement and repeated four times.
A
fourth signal is selected, transformed into a movement and repeated four times.

The four movement phrases are practiced in the order they were created and this becomes a dance using the four signals, which are repeated four times.

Variations:
Add more signals.
Add or decrease the number of repetitions for each signal's movement.
Increase the size of the movement.
Add a locomotor movement to the signal. For example, add a side step while performing the touchdown signal arm movement.
