Background: The dance movements reflect the coal miners work movements.

Grade Level: 3-5

Formation: Single circle facing counterclockwise.

Movements: Step in place, Walking forward, Walking backward, Rock step, Toe-heel step



Description:

Dig Step -  Two steps in place with the right foot while the hands pretend to hold a shovel and perform a shoveling motion two times to the right.  Repeat the same action with the left foot and and shovel to the left. (4 counts)  2 counts right then 2 counts left. Cue words:  Dig, Dig, Dig, Dig

Throw the Dirt. - Take one step (walk) forward on the right foot and with both hands together pretend to throw the dirt over the right shoulder. Repeat the same action with the left foot. (2 counts) One count for each step. Cue words: Throw, Throw

Wipe the Sweat - Step backward (walk) on the right foot and with wipe the right hand across the forehead as if you were wiping the sweat from your forehead.  Repeat the same action with the left foot and left hand. (2 counts) One count for each step. Cue words; Wipe, Wipe

Push the Cart - Step forward on the right foot and push the hands forward to represent pushing a cart and repeat on the left. One count for each step. (2 counts)  Cue words: Push, Push

Mount Fuji - Rock step forward on the right bring feet together.  At the same time the hands and arms make a pointed shape at chest level (to represent the mountain shape) then hands move diagonally down and out, next clap hold clap clap hold clap. (8 counts)
