Troika (Russia)

Background:  This dance is designed to reflect  three horses pulling a sleigh through the deep snow.

Grade: 5- High School

Formation: Triple Circle.  Dancers are in groups of three facing counterclockwise.  Dancers are holding hands or holding scarves between them. The triple circle formation resembles the spokes on a wheel.

Movements: Running kicks forward, Running forward in a small circle with high knee lifts.







Description:

Part 1. The Kicking Runs. Run 16 running steps with feet kicking up in front.  The first four runs are diagonally right, second four runs, diagonally left, and the remaining eight are straight forward moving around the circle. (16 counts)

Part 2. The Arch. The dancer on the outside, who is on the right, runs under an arch made by the center dancer and the dancer on the left. They  hold their hands up to make an arch. The center dancer follows under the arch and turns in place.  Then the inside dancer runs through the arch made by the center dancer and the outside dancer. The center dancer follows under the arch and turns in place. (16 counts)

Part 3. Circle of Three. The three dancers join hands to form a small circle and run with high knees 12 steps clockwise (left) and then do three stamps in place.  (16 counts) 
The running circle is repeated to the right.(16 counts).

The dance is repeated.  To make this dance a mixer, the center person moves forward to the next group when the last three stamps occur.
