This
project, inspired by the NASA Mars Reference Mission, asks students to
design a manned mission to Mars. The faculty team provided a catalog
of components and design options, such as power generators, propulsion
systems, laboratory equipment, robots etc., that are available for this
mission. The students, working in teams of 3-4, are designing what
they consider the optimal Mars mission, given a price limit of $1 billion.
To do this, the student teams must examine many questions. These
include technical matters such as, how much power is required, and which
generation system provides it for the lowest cost? There are also
philosophical and social questions to be answered, such as: What exactly
do we wish to accomplish by exploring Mars? Do we have the right
to exploit Martian resources however we wish, or the responsibility to
study without interfering?
Each clinic team is also required to produce a technical process description, in which they examine one engineering process related to the mission in greater detail, and each individual student in Sophomore Clinic is required to write a research paper on issues of professional, ethical and/or social responsibility. The teams will incorporate their findings from these projects into their mission design.
