Soil Drill Project

This is a commercial drill rig. Our Little Beaver drill is much smaller.

A Little Beaver earth drill & auger was purchased to provide students with experience in retrieving sediment samples for geotechnical and environmental projects. A Spring 2000 Clinic team got the drill ready for use in clinics and geotechnical engineering classes. The students completed the following tasks:

  • The drill engine was operated to test the engine.
  • The drill was used to drill a four-foot deep hole into a silty loam soil located on the West side of Rowan Hall.
  • A Standard Operating Procedure for starting and operating the auger was developed. The procedure is a supplement to the operating manuals provided by the manufacturer.

The student report is available. Note: the clinic team worked on a number of tasks other than the soil drill. Information relating to the drill is primarily found in Appendix F of the report.

Another Jr/Sr Clinic Team got to work with the drill shown to the right. See the AMIBA project, performed for the Air Force.
