Syllabus

Level and Objectives

This course is the second part of an introduction to classical physics. This course serves as a general education requirement for students in chemistry, physics, math and engineering. It is also ageneral education elective for students in other fields. Physics II requires working knowledge of algebra, vectors, trigonometry, and basic derivatives and integrals.

The objectives of Physics I & Physics II are:

• To introduce the student to the laws of physics and their applications to a variety of macroscopic problems.
• To teach the student how to read and write physical phenomena by means of equations.
• To familiarized students with approaches and techniques of physics useful in other sciences and technology.
• To enhance students conceptual understanding of physics by an extensive use of class demonstrations and/or class activities.

Attendance Policy

Students are expected to be present at each schedule class. Students who are absent for reasons of illness, death in family, etc. should inform their instructors as soon as possible. Faculty are under no obligation to make special provisions for students absent for capricious reasons.

Course Requirements

Students are required to attend classes and labs, to do homework, to take tests and to write lab reports.

Notes:

• Late homework or late lab report has a penalty of 10% off per day (Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays or other holidays do not count). In your late homework or lab report you must write the date when you hand in.
• If you miss class or lab for health reasons you must have a doctor’s note.
• During the lab period you are expected to do the data analysis and have the instructor approve your work. You may have to repeat the experiments if necessary.
• If you miss a quiz you will not be able to make it up. If you have a valid excuse the quiz you missed will not count toward your grade, but you must still hand in the homework.
• Write down on your homework the number of problems that you seriously attempted as could be justified by your written work.
• Academic Honesty Policy (from Student Handbook): cheating, falsification, plagiarism and facilitating academic dishonesty is penalized with an For first time offenders.
• Withdrawal from a course after Mid-Semester is considered exceptional and includes a mark stating whether the student was passing or failing the course.
• Exams problems are at least 50% from homework.
• Students will be provided with formulas for every exam or quiz.
