Keynote Speaker

Dr. Monica Cox, an Assistant Professor from the Department of Engineering Education, Purdue University was the invited keynote speaker for the ECT workshop. Dr Cox made an interactive PowerPoint presentation on the need for K-12 educators to get involved in engineering education. She addressed key questions such as Who are engineers?

  • What do engineers do?
  • Why is there a need in the USA to promote engineering from an early age to K-12 students?
  • What is the role of K-12 educators as advocates of engineering?

Dr. Cox specifically presented data on the percentage of students pursuing careers in engineering; the data on women and minorities pursuing engineering and the current status of engineering students pursuing advanced degrees. Dr. Cox also focused on the reasons for low enrollment in engineering and the solutions for enhancing engineering education. She also discussed the Engineering Education program at Purdue University and the need for such programs around the country.

Dr. Cox’s presentation was very well received by the ECT participants. This was evident from the surveys that indicated 97% responded that her presentation quality, organization and deliver were excellent.
