A four week non residential High School Scholars Program is being offered in the Summer of 2008 (July 8 through August 7) to expose transportation engineering to high school students from under-represented populations. Our goal is to target seniors and juniors. This internship program will offer interns a 4-week agenda of transportation research, work experience, seminars and field trips to introduce them to the many aspects of the complex field of transportation. Twelve Rowan University engineering professors will be involved in the GAMTTEP High School Scholar Program. The theme of this program “ Transportation Engineering” is such that faculty from various engineering backgrounds can participate. Twenty-four high school students will be selected to participate in research activities. Selected students will work closely with assigned faculty on research projects that are relevant to the needs of the transportation engineering industry. Faculty participating in this endeavor have a strong record of mentoring K-12 students, and graduate and undergraduate engineering students. Each participant will be paired with a Rowan student. This “buddy” system allows the students to have someone to direct any inquiries they may have regarding the research project, engineering, the Rowan Campus, the city of Glassboro and other general issues or concerns. GAMTTEP activities will include research projects, seminars, community-building modules and assessment activities. The duration will be four weeks, from early July to early August. Faculty will be actively involved in mentoring activities for high school students during and after the duration of this project. An advisory board will oversee the program and develop measures for sustaining the program.

Participants will be paid a stipend of $1,500 for their research activities.

Transportation will be provided for the participants every day. Program will start at 9AM and end at 3PM Mondays through Thursdays.

Seminars are an integral part of the student experience. Seminars will adress careers in the transportation industry and issues facing underrepresented populations in science and engineering.

Educational field trips will be used to broaden the knowledge of the participants beyond the laboratory and academic experience. Field trips are expected to include local companies, airports, the FAA pavement research facility and area bridges.

Community building modules will include social events such as picnics, informal lunches, movies and field trips.
