Autumn 2005

Assignment 5

Due Wednesday, 20 October 2005, 4:45 PM

  • PV Design Part One -
  • Design a Photovoltaic Energy System for a Commercial Building that uses 3,780 kWh per year and is located near Ocean City, NJ.  Assume it has an exposed south facing roof with a 40o pitch angle that can handle the additional load of the panels.  The south facing roof has dimensions of 45 x 78 feet.  If your system can not meet all the load with the area provided, propose a smaller one.  Provide details (including the specification sheets) of the inverter and PV modules you have selected by downloading your selection from the manufacturers' websites.  Provide a schematic diagram outlining your system and its components and general wiring.  Please be creative and NOT use the sample urls I have provided below:
  • Trace Inverters

  • ASE PV Modules :
  • PV Design Part Two -
  • How well does your system's monthly power production match the customer's demand if we assume that the customer has the same usage per month?  During what months will the system be producing excess power, and what month's will the system require most back-up from the utility grid (assume the customer's energy requirements are all generated during the day)?
  • Chapter Seven -
  • Ristinen and Kraushaar (pages 241-242) - Questions and Problems 1, 7, 8, and 9
  • Ristinen and Kraushaar (pages 123-124) - Multiple Choice Questions 1, 2, 13, and 17
