    Course Description:

This course provides an opportunity for for expanded treatment of the practice of engineering through recycling applications drawn from engineering disciplines and industrty. The communication component is designed to help students prepare and present messages in public speaking contexts.  In addition to engineering design, the course emphasises oral presentation skills, as well as critical thinking, listening and organisational skills.  During the 2001 Spring semester the sudents will be encouraged to apply those and other key skills in the design and piloting of a recycling initiative across the Rowan University campus.  Additionally, they will begin to understand the key isues underlying the debates regarding desiging with the environmental impact of their product in mind and the economics that constrain current engineering practice.

    1. Identify customers, define their needs, assess the markt and define the goals, objectives and constraints for a design problem.
    2. Develop engineering specifications for a "quality design"
    3. Generate multiple engineering design solutions using various techniques and develop best solution based on multiple techniques.
    4. Perform engineering economics calclations and make engineering decisions based on economics considerations.
