I am currently enrolled in the Master of Arts in Writing program at Rowan university. I designed this professional website page, as well as a CSS Zen Garden page, to display my skills in css and html code. Both of these projects were completed in the spring of 2008.
Creative nonfiction is by far my favorite genre of writing and in the fall of 2007, I took a creative nonfiction class. In this class we wrote our own stories, as well as critiqued the work of our classmates, and well known authors. This is an abstract critique of the piece, "Riding in Cars With Boys", by Kathie Dobie.
My passion for writing, is not only for personal expression. I have dedicated my career to teaching writing as well. I teach English full time at Paul VI High School in Haddonfield, NJ. I also teach English Composition I, English Composition II, and Introduction to Literature at Camden County College. I design my lesson plans with student-driven learning techniques, that will engage them in their assignments and hopefully help them foster a love for writing. Here is a sample lesson plan I used in the fall of 2007 for my ninth grade, Writing for Academic Success class, and a sample syllabus from my Spring 2008 English Composition II class.
In the fall of 2008, I have two new projects I am looking forward to. In conjunction with La Salle University, I will be taking part in a research project, based on the Freedom Writers project done by Erin Gruwell in the early 90's. The project develops a love for writing in teens, through journalizing. This is a fairly new educational practice that focuses on teens dealing with the issues they face, by writing about them in a journal, and sharing thier thoughts and opinions with thier peers. The project focuses on teaching students to deal with the issues they face through writing and self expression, rather than violence or substance abuse. It attempts to foster a love of writing and a promote strong sense of unity and self esteem among teens.
I will also be teaching a new section of communications courses at Paul VI. This program will teach students the basics of digital editing, broadcast journalism, film production and public relations. These are the unit plans I created for the Broadcast Journalism course that I will teach in the fall of 2008.
