A Dream Come True
The migratory phenomenon is an innate fact of life brought on by city progress and the poverty of the countryside, resulting from many factors such as the most influential one, population increase. Although Cuzco is not an industrialized city, it is a source of income that indirectly encourages migration, whether it be permanent or temporary, as is the case with the carriers whose presence is not welcomed by anyone in the city. These facts moved a German friend, with his "Canon" in hand, to develop a number of audiovisuals, titled "Un día...Una vida" ("A day... A life"), that was shown publically for the purpose of sensitizing the community and communicating to the carriers the importance of uniting. At the same time, a Peruvian social promotor began to take action to organize the carriers.
After some time, these actions produced fruit, resulting in the formation of the Asociación de Cargadores de Soga del Cusco (ACSC) (Cuzco Rope Carriers' Association) on March 17th, 1985. This newly-formed group perceived the necessity of finding a place where they could meet, live, eat clean and well-balanced meals, practice personal higiene, train, and become literate; in other words, improve carriers' lives. However, the organizational weakness of the ACSC made it impossible to carryout activities that would facilitate the construction and management of the project. This problem motivated the creation of an NGO on March 17th,

1987, made up of Peruvian professionals and foreigners, called the "Asociación Civil, Gregorio Condori Mamani" ("Gregorio Condori Mamani Civil Association"). (This name was chosen to honor Gregorio Condori Mamani, after the heartbreaking facts of his life as

a carrier were made public in his autobiography.) The audiovisual, "Un día...Una vida" ("A day... A life"), was the instrument that managed to sensitize and motivate the participation of international organizations. Among these organizations was the German financial organization, "Pan para el Mundo" ("Bread for the world"), which supported the project from the very beginning, to the point of assisting in the acquisition of a land plot for the house, building the infrastructure, and later becoming involved in

the project management. The project became a reality on June 22nd, 1989, when it was opened for use and inaugurated as the "Casa del Cargador - Gregorio Condori Mamani" ("House of the Carrier - Gregorio Condori Mamani"). The constructed area of the house comes to 870.3m and the open courtyard contained within the house comes to 249.5m . Within the house, there are facilities to house 120 inhabitants, rooms for training and recreation, a kitchen and dining area, showers, bathrooms, launderette, and office space for the management. The house is located on Avenida Alta, number 515, in the city of Cuzco.
