Course Structure

During the semester each student will complete a semester-long design project jointly sponsored by two or more of the engineering departments at Rowan. Students will have the opportunity to choose from among the following three projects, which will be described briefly in the following section:

Note: Only two of the above projects will be run. The decision will be based solely on student interest.

Engineering Design Projects

1. NASA In Situ Resource Utilization

This project will ask the students to apply engineering design and economics principles to the problem of mining resources from asteroids and/or the moon. Student teams would need to assess equipment and crew requirements, the fuel cost associated with delivering this payload to outer space, and the anticipated return on the investment. Among the questions that must be answered: What aspects of the project will be automated, and how many crew members are required? Which is preferable, a single mission, or a sustained long-term effort involving the creation of a mining colony? How should the materials be returned to earth?
