About the Professor
DeMond
S. Miller, Ph.D. (Mississippi State University) is a professor of sociology and he is the director of the Liberal Arts and Sciences Institute for Research and Community
Service at Rowan University (Glassboro, New Jersey). He has worked as principal investigator to facilitate research projects involving natural and human-induced ecological disasters, environmental issues and community satisfaction. His principle areas of teaching are Environmental Sociology, Medical Sociology, Clinical Sociology and Applied Community Development. His primary area of specialization is environmental sociology (disaster studies and the study of the social construction of place), community development and community organizing, and social impact assessment. Dr. Miller is licensed (certified) clinical substance abuse counselor in New Jersey, Louisiana and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Dr. Miller has presented and published several professional papers; recent examples of such work can be found in: Space and Culture: An International Journal of Social Spaces, International Journal of the Humanities, Journal of Black Studies, The international Journal for Service Learning in Engineering, The Journal of Public Management and Social Policy, Sociological Spectrum, and The International Journal of Culture, Tourism and Hospitality Research. Recently, he has contributed to a number of edited volumes including Through the Eye of Katrina: Social Justice in the United States andThe Sociology of Katrina: Perspectives on a Modern Catastrophe; he is the co-author (with J. Rivera) of Hurricane Katrina and the Redefinition of Landscape (Lexington Press) and co-editor with J. Rivera of the following three volumes, How Ethnically Marginalized Americans Cope with Catastrophic Disaster: Studies in Suffering and Resiliency (Edwin Mellen Press); Community Disaster Recovery and Resiliency: Exploring Global Opportunities and Challenges (CRC/Taylor & Francis) and Comparative Emergency Management: Examining Global and Regional Responses to Disasters (CRC/Taylor & Francis);and co-editor (with S. Evans, C. Taylor and M. Dunlap) of African American and Community Engagement in Higher Education: Community Service, Service Learning and Community-Based Research published by SUNY Press . As an applied sociologist, he works with local community development initiatives and non-profit organizations. Dr. Miller has worked to build coalitions among communities and academic institutions and he received the Distinguished Leadership in Service and Community Volunteerism Award from Rowan University. Dr. Miller is a founding board member of the Camden Academy Charter High School Board of Trustees (Camden, New Jersey). |
