South Africa
Part 7
Many vineyards as we left the Cape Town area.
The rain then came down heavily for many miles and
hours.
We could just make out the waterfalls through the rain.
The usual shacks along the road.
The hint of a rainbow as the rain slowed.
Lots of flat as we traveled route N1.
It became flatter as we went east. But the mountains were visible further east.
Lots of sheep and goats. The owners were in distant
villages.
White sheep with black faces are raised only for meat.
Further east the mountains became clear.
Closer yet to Karoo National Park.
Finally.
Into Karoo National Park.
Gemsbok.
Kudu male.
Kudu female.
Tsessebe.
Ostriches.
Black rhino. He threw up dirt threatening to charge so
we left quickly.
The Black-backed jackal.
The park itself was rather amazing. We came up those roads.
Quite a valley.
The rock formations were very interesting.
These can be rented within the park.
Our room at the Haus Holzapfel B&B in Beaufort
West. Cooked our dinner downstairs.
We saw far too many of these signs. Only 10 minutes but
there were many of them.
We stopped here because we heard they had a hippo
reserve.
Hippos not visible mid-day while they rest.
We were able to arrange lunch at the hunting lodge
though.
Big fireplace.
And on down the road we went.
More shacks. All electrified though.
Everyone gets a government-supplied outhouse.
The road to Bloemfontein.
On a truck we passed.
We saw lots of old-style windmills pumping water into
cisterns for the livestock.
Some odd mountains. The soft rock erodes away and the
hard rock doesnŐt.
Our room in Ladybrand at the Twin Oaks Guest Farm.
Dinner at a Chinese restaurant.
City streets were worse than in Kruger Park.
