Primary Areas of Teaching and Research Interest

Courses Taught:

Research

Major research interests are environmental fluid mechanics, fish passage at hydraulic structures, and remediation of contaminated sediments. Current research predominantly focuses on the evaluation and rehabilitation of small dams.  Prior research has included fluid mechanics associated with interfacial mass transfer and mass transport in environmental systems. Specific research projects include methods to relate gas transfer across a water surface to liquid turbulence right on the water surface; methods to evaluate water and air pollution caused by dredging of contaminated sediments; and the prediction of total dissolved gas concentrations downstream of dam spillways to aid downstream migration of juvenile salmon. Additional research includes numerous field and laboratory investigations to aid design of fish passage facilities at hydroelectric dams in the Pacific Northwest; physical models of pumping stations; hydrographic surveys; and geophysical site assessments.
