Dr. Ranganathan earned a PhD in mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His doctoral research was titled 'Scale-Dependent Homogenization and Scaling Laws in Random Polycrystals' and was conducted under the supervision of Professor Martin Ostoja-Starzewski.

Upon completion of his PhD, Dr. Ranganathan joined the Texas Medical Center in Houston as a Postdoctoral Fellow under the supervision of Professor Mauro Ferrari. Dr. Ranganathan’s research was on the mathematical modeling of a novel BioNanoScaffolds for Post-Traumatic OsteoRegeneration (fracture putty) and was sponsored by Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).

Prior to joining Rowan University, Dr. Ranganathan worked for four years at the American University of Sharjah as an Assistant Professor in mechanical engineering. In the past, he has also worked as a mechanical engineer at General Electric Global Research.

Dr. Ranganathan’s research interests are predominantly in the area of applied mechanics with applications to heterogeneous media (random composites, polycrystals), smart biomaterials and biomechanics. As an educator, he also interested in promoting and fostering excellence in engineering education.

Dr. Ranganathan has won several awards, including the 'University Gold Medal' during his undergraduate studies, the 'Hats-Off Award' and 'Management Award' for outstanding research contributions at General Electric, and more recently the 'Certificate of Recognition' awarded by Shell Oil Company.
