Affective Objectives in
Physical Education

Affective objectives are statements of student outcomes in a lesson or unit which pertain to the development of traits and behaviors which are considered positive.  These include: "values, appreciations, attitudes and interests." (Schmottlach & MacManama, 1997).  Well written affective objectives explain what accomplishments students will demonstrate as the result of the lesson or unit.  Affective objectives may include playing by the rules, supporting others, valuing physical activity for it's potential benefits, working well with others, and so on.  They also imply assessment - the teacher needs to write affective objectives so that the student  outcome is clearly stated and is observable or measureable by the teacher, student and/or other students.  Affective objectives will refer to an observable demonstration of values (see 1., below), attitudes and social interaction (see 2., below), and interests (see 3., below).


Affective objectives (soccer, grade 8):

1.  Students will identify the potential benefits of soccer for physical and mental health (NJCCC Standard 2.6.A1)*

2.  Students will coach and encourage their partners and team mates (NJCCC Standard 2.5.D1)**

3.  Students will evaluate playing soccer as part of a personal fitness plan (NJCCC Standard 2.6.B2)***

Affective objectives (manipulatives/kicking, grade 4):

1.  Students will identify the potential benefits of kicking games for physical and mental health (NJCCC Standard 2.6.B1)†

2.  Students will coach and encourage their partners and team mates (NJCCC Standard 2.2.A4)††

3.  Students will evaluate the benefits of kicking activities and games for personal health (NJCCC Standard 2.6.A1)††† 


      * Summarize the potential short- and long-term physical, social, and emotional benefits of regular
         physical activity.

    ** Analyze participant and observer behaviors for evidence of good sportsmanship.

  *** Design and evaluate a personal fitness plan, taking into consideration fitness, health and
         nutritional status, age, interests, and abilities, and discuss how the plan may be adapted
         to injury, illness, or aging.

      † Discuss the importance of regular physical activity.

    †† Identify and employ ways to improve listening skills.

  ††† Discuss the physical, social, and emotional benefits of regular physical activity.
