The internet is a wonderful thing.  

    "Bruce McCallister, this is Billy McCallister," Billy said.

    "This is a present (pleasant perhaps?) surprise," Bruce said.  
"Yeah, it's been almost 12 years."

(Silence for about a minute.)

    "Son, things were really complicated when you were a kid," Bruce said to Billy. "Let me explain some things about my life so that you can better understand me.  I won't ask you for pity, and if you're angry at me I undestand that that's your right.  If you could just let me tell you a bit about my life, then maybe things will make sense.  I want to tell you a little about my childhood.  I always want to tell you about my mistakes.  I'll tell you about my professional life."  

    "That would be good," Billy said.
