"Son, jail is a terrible place," Bruce told
his son. "Men try to do terrible things to
one another there. If I end up in jail, I'll end up
defending myself, and killing whoever gives me a problem."
"You're too young to understand now, but when you're older, you will," Bruce said. "I hope you remember this talk when you're older."
" I want you to be a moral, upstanding gentleman.
"Always treat women with dignity and respect. Cherish them,
because they are special. Never hit a woman. Always open doors
for them. Never speak to them disrespectfully. Always stick
up for them, even if it means getting your ass kicked."
Even though Billy was only three years old, he
sometimes seemed like an adult. Bruce and Molly used to talk to
Billy as if he were an adult. Sometimes the conversation would go
over young Billy's head. Most of the time, Billy knew what was
going on.
Billy was at this time, however, only able to "see through a
glass, darkly." One day, Billy would understand these cryptic
words. Billy was only three years old when his father told him
this, but it was an important talk nonetheless. Bruce reasoned
that he could be dead any day, so he should take every opportunity he
could to teach his son an important life lesson. It turned out
okay.
