e-mail to shreek@rowan.edu)
Instructions:
This is a take-home, open book/notes examination, due Sunday,
Nov 15, 2009 (midnight) via e-mail to the instructor.
There are 2-parts to the midterm examination. Part 1 was handed
to you in class on Nov 5, and can also be downloaded here. In Part 2, you are required
to restore
and enhance the degraded image that has been assigned to you, and
generate
a short report.
You are required to work individually.
DO NOT consult / discuss with others! DO NOT compare images.
This exam is governed by the HONOR
SYSTEM. Violations will be reported to the Dean of Students as per
the University's Academic Integrity Policy: see the Rowan
University catalog: http://www.rowan.edu/catalogs/pdf/2009_ugrad_catalog.pdf,
pages 34-42)
This is an exam. Instructor's help will be
limited to justifiable hardware/software issues only (e.g, I am not
able to download image........, nothing shows up when I load image into
MATLAB....etc.)
GOOD LUCK
Requirements: Part 2
In this part, you are required to restore &
enhance a degraded image that you have been assigned
(directions for accessing the image follow).
Design and implement appropriate image restoration and
enhancement algorithms.
Include gray-level pictures of the the original (before)
and restored & enhanced (after) images in your report.
Provide a brief description of the approach used and the
algorithm design.
Comment on your approach. What are your conclusions?
Provide the MATLAB source code (m-file) that you developed for
enhancing the image - I should be able to replicate your results. Please
e-mail this file to shreek@rowan.edu
Directions for Downloading Images
Image files are in the MATLAB binary file format and possess
filenames image*_degraded.mat where * stands for the image
number assigned to you. These files can be downloaded from the
directory using the link provided below. DO NOT intrude by
downloading an image assigned to another
student- remember that you are bound by the HONOR SYSTEM.
To download image into your PC hard-drive, follow the link to
the directory, place cursor on the image file, click the right
mouse button and use the Save Target As... option.
To import image image into MATLAB,
>> load image*_degraded.mat
where * stands for the image number assigned to you.
If the directions are unclear, or if you have difficulties
accessing your assigned image, e-mail me at shreek@rowan.edu. DO NOT WAIT till
the day before the exam is due!

stored: Click here.
Grading
Your restoration and enhament algorithm will be graded using both
objective and subjective measures:
Objective: Were your assumptions upon oberving
the degraded image justifiable? Were the restoration and enhancement
algorithms you used appropriate and sufficient? (50 points)
Subjective: Do the restored and enhanced images
look better? (50 points)
