the assignment
In Writing Space: Computers, Hypertext, and the Remediation of Print Jay David Bolter argues:
[T]he World Wide Web offers us the experience of moving through a visual and conceptual space different from the space of the book, although this experience still depends on our intuitive understanding of that earlier writing space. Indeed, we depend in a variety of ways on our knowledge of print in order to read and write hypertexts. (45)
As we have discussed in class, Bolter's argument about hypertext and the World Wide Web can be extended to other writing space technologies-both on and off line. For this project, then, I would like you to use Bolter's ideas on remediation and technology to write an essay in which you discuss a writing space that you use regularly, the technologies that are remediated, and how your knowledge of those former technologies enable you write successfully in the new space. You may also want to speculate as to how writing in the new space has impacted how you write in the spaces the new technology remediates. Be sure to support your argument(s) about the nature of remediation and technology by citing Bolter (and any of the Bolter-related texts posted on the readings page). Where appropriate, use concrete examples of the kinds of writing you do in the space you have chosen.
This essay will have three versions: a rough draft, a final draft, and a hypertext version based on your final draft. Accompanying the hypertext version will be a one page discussion of how putting the essay in a hypertext document effected the way you thought about the essay's structure, goals, and ability to reference your ideas. Images may be used in all versions. We will talk about the hypertext version more in class.
Rough and Final versions of the essay are to be written double spaced using Microsoft Word, Times New Roman font size 12, and with 1 inch margins all around. Use the following format when saving the file: "yourlastname-essay1-draft.doc". Bring electronic and printer versions of the rough and final draft to class on the day they are due.
