Education

1999 - 2004 University of Massachusetts (Ph.D. in Sociology)
Thesis: "Latvian Nationalist Ideas and Intellectuals 19th century - 1939" The dissertation provides a historical and comparative account of the development of Latvian nationalism as it was shaped by changing political contexts as well as borrowed ideologies. Using data from intellectuals' political publications, historical materials, numerous secondary studies, interviews, autobiographies and memoirs, and comparisons with other nationalisms, I argue that Latvian nationalism was a result of the work of intellectuals rather than elites, mass movements or particular political organizations. As a result it was more likely to accommodate authoritarian and non-democratic political goals. This research supports theories that differentiate between state-building and cultural nationalisms and spans about 100 years covering three periods - the early cultural nationalism of the 19th century, the politics of culture and authoritarian leader between 1921 and 1939, and exile nationalism in the United States of America after World War II.
1997 - 1999 The Ohio State University (M.A. in Women's Studies)
Thesis: "Exploring Political Subjectivity in Post-Soviet Latvia: A Trope Analysis of Secretaries' Narratives about Work, Citizenship, and Sexual Harassment"
1992 - 1997 University of Latvia (B.A. in Philosophy)
1980 - 1992 Ogre Secondary School. Ogre, Latvia
