CS 99300: Computer Field Experience (3-12 s.h.)
Students are assigned projects in a professional environment.

Prerequisites:

NOTE: Only 3 credits of this course may be applied once towards CS restricted electives, any remaining credits would count as free electives.

Attendance

Regular attendance is required and expected by Rowan for all scheduled meetings. PRIOR to an absence where your attendance is expected, you should notify your professor and discuss making up anything missed. You are also still responsible for any missed material and completing all work by the assigned due dates.

Academic Integrity and Plagiarism

Plagiarism and cheating in ANY form is considered academic dishonesty and will NOT be tolerated in any of your classes.
Students are encouraged to share ideas and consult with other approved resources. However, all submitted work (except group work as determined by the instructor) is expected to be fully comprehended and completed individually. Work may NOT be referenced or copied in whole or in part from the Internet, book, another student, unauthorized resources (including Chegg, CourseHero, or other similar sites), etc... and allowing others to view or copy your work is also NOT permitted. Students must also observe the instructor's written and verbal directions in ensuring the integrity of all academic work, including but not limited to securing mobile devices during exams as well as using only authorized resources for additional help.

Generative AI is prohibited in this course and is also considered a violation of the academic integrity policy.
The purpose of the assignments is to help you develop key skills and to assess whether you have mastered the course learning objectives for your continued success. Generative AI (such as ChatGBT, Gemini, CoPilot, watsonx, etc...) or other unauthorized tools will defeat that purpose and misrepresent your mastery of the material. Using ANY generative AI without instructor permission, accessing prohibited resources, receiving unauthorized assistance, and posting course materials online are all considered violations. Students committing any act of academic dishonesty may fail the assignment, fail the course, or face other sanctions. If you have questions regarding what resources may be allowed or how academic integrity applies in the course, please contact the instructor and review further strategies regarding Academic Integrity at Rowan University.

Accessing, utilizing, sharing, or posting any course work/materials using unauthorized resources is strictly forbidden.

It is the student's responsibility to be fully familiar with the Rowan Academic Integrity Policy and the Student Code of Conduct. Students will be held accountable to firmly adhere to these policies. By the act of assignment/assessment submission, it will be assumed all students thereby affirm their understanding that they may neither receive nor provide any unauthorized assistance with the completion of their work. Class Times and Locations

Course Structure

Requirements for this course would include:

  1. Eligibility
    • Appointment to meet with me in the semester PRIOR to start of employment to discuss and determine provisional eligibility of acquired co-op/summer internship position (students who do not meet with me may NOT be eligible for this course)
    • Full-time employment with professional work for a duration of 400-1000 hours in a technically qualified area of computing
  2. During Co-op/Internship
    • Maintain WEEKLY LOGS to record your work completed with short description (high-level technologies are fine with proprietary information omitted) and include supervisor/manager signature each week (if possible)
    • Obtain a final SUPERVISORS LETTER (towards the end) describing the job responsibilities, what was learned, list of accomplishments, and rating of overall performance
  3. After Co-op/Internship
    • Prepare a low-level, summary PROJECT REPORT (~15-20 pages) using template with technical details of the work
    • Complete a high-level, overview PRESENTATION (~15-20 minutes long) with information on the co-op, you, and how Rowan coursework may have applied
    • (Internships ONLY) Write a short JOB DESCRIPTION for your technically qualifying internship company and position responsibilities
    • (Co-ops ONLY) Write a short 1 paragraph TESTIMONIAL detailing the benefits of the co-op
  4. Upon return to Rowan in the semester following Co-op/Internship
    • There may be no class in the first week. However, be prepared to attend the (virtual) class meeting as scheduled in my WebEx personal room (rowan.webex.com/meet/chien)
    • Submit your qualifying JOB DESCRIPTION (for internships) and TESTIMONIAL (for co-ops only) into Canvas to ensure you qualify for this course
    • Make an appointment via RSN-Starfish to meet with me individually to review the course requirements and to ensure your eligibility qualifications
    • Schedule a time for your presentation during the semester
    • Deliver presentation to faculty/peers/students (possibly in the CS Learning Community - LiBBy)
    • Submit all assignments as required into BB
      • Job Description or Co-op Testimonial (as applicable)
      • Weekly Logs

NOTE: Eligibility for this course is contingent upon instructor meeting in the semester PRIOR to starting co-op/internship AND instructor review with determination of qualifying job testimonial/description after completing co-op/internship (where ineligibility may result in student drop/withdrawal or possibly failure grade for the course).

Co-op students will receive an incomplete (IN) grade in the semester of their co-op with final letter grade assigned after their return in the Fall with completion of all required coursework.

IMPORTANT NOTE: After completion of all the required assignments in the semester AFTER your co-op/internship, the final course grade will reflect the graded condition of all the completed/submitted assignments.
