""Benjamin Johnson married Elizabeth Boardman of Preston, Connecticut, and soon after removed from Andover to Canterbury, New Hampshire, where their son John [the subject] was born, 02 December 1771. Benjamin Johnson was a farmer, and like most of the farmers of New England of his day, served in the army during the war for independence. At the battle of Bennington, under Gen. Stark, he distinguished himself by his bravery and received the commendation of that officer. He sustained an irreproachable character throughout his life, and he died at the age of eighty-eight, his might continuing unimpaired to the last."."3Johnson, Edwin Ferry (son of), Memoir of Edwin Ferry Johnson, Civil Engineer, p. 3, .
