Attracting Bubbles & Water

Purpose
To demonstrate that electrically neutral soap bubbles and water are attracted to a charged object.
Location
Room 146, shelf L2
Description
Blow some bubbles toward the ceiling, then quickly rub the TeflonR rod with fur to give it a negative charge. Hold the charged rod near the bubbles to show they are attracted.
It is also easy to demonstrate that a stream of water is attracted to the rod. Just establish a small, stable flow stream and hold the charged rod close to it a few inches below the faucet. It should cause an obvious deflection of the stream. The fact that water is a polar molecule enhances this effect.
