- Purpose
- To demonstrate that adhesive tape becomes electrically charged when pulled from a surface.
- Location
- Room 146, shelf L2
- Description
- Pull two equal-length pieces of tape from a dispenser and hold them vertically in each hand. Slowly bring them closer together so the class can see that they do not attract each other. Fold the sticky end of each piece to make non-sticky handles. Attach the sticky side of one tape to the non-sticky side of the other, achieving maximum overlap. Pull the tapes apart, then slowly bring them closer together (preferably with non-sticky sides facing each other). It should become very obvious that the tapes are attracted toward each other before they get close enough to touch. Point out that the closer they are the more strongly they attract each other. (Use colored tape for better visibility.)
- This demo should always work well, regardless of humidity.
