- Purpose
- To demonstrate that sound originates from rapid oscillations, usually too rapid to be seen.
- Location
- Room 146; 600 ml beaker on shelf N4, tuning fork on shelf J3 (long, 125 Hz fork recommended)
- Description
- Carefully fill the beaker about halfway, without splashing the sides. Take a long tuning fork, such as the 125 Hz fork shown, and sharply strike the desk top or the heel of your shoe hard, so as to make a loud tone (i.e. sound). Then, demonstrate that the origin of the sound is in fact a rapid oscillation of the tuning fork tines by striking the tuning fork again and sticking the tines into the water, creating a substantial splash due to their vigorous (unseen) motion.
