Ball on a String

Purpose
To demonstrate the tendency of an object to continue moving in a straight line, at the same speed, when no net force is acting on it regardless of its previous state of motion.
Location
room 136, shelf L4
Description
Swing the cork ball on the string over your head in a circle and get students to predict what path it will follow when you release it at a certain point, then do the demo. Suggestion: Practice this beforehand to assure release at just the right instant. Also, consider doing this in a hallway or the atrium.
