- Purpose
- To demonstrate the concepts of mass density and average mass density
- Location
- Room 136, shelf O3
- Description
- The set of cylindrical masses (left photo) all have approximately the same volume, but they are made of different materials, so their densities, and therefore their masses differ. This is easily detected by individually bouncing the masses up and down in ones hand and feeling the differences in inertia. The spheres also have about the same volume, but different contents and materials, so one is much heavier than the other and therefore has a much greater average density. Pass them around for students to feel the differences.
