Penny and Feather

Purpose
To demonstrate that all objects fall at the same rate in the absence of air
Location
Room 136, on large wooden cart, Spare tube with penny and feather on wall shelf U7
Description
Evacuate the clear plastic tube using the vacuum pump on the wooden demo cart. Make sure that the bleed valve on the top of the pump is closed, and the tube valve is open (as shown). When full vacuum is obtained shut the tube valve, turn the pump off and slowly bleed the vacuum from the tubing. Remove demo tube from tubing. Invert the tube quickly to show that the feather falls just as fast as the penny. Release the tube vacuum slowly (to prevent condensation from forming) and repeat to show the expected effects of air drag.
