Ring and Disc Race

Purpose
To show that two circular objects having the same mass and diameter, but different rotational inertia will accelerate down the ramp at different rates.
Location
Room 136: disc and ring on shelf N6; track on shelf U6
Description
Use one of the pulley tracks with the metal side rails, and carefully align the rind and disc to roll straight down the track without colliding or going off the sides. Have students predict which will win and release them simultaneously. It should be very apparent that the ring has the greater rotational inertia to be overcome.
