- Purpose
- To observe the Brownian motion of microscopic particles in water
- Location
- Room 136, shelf P3
- Description
- This VHS tape was made several years ago using a camcorder connected to the video output of a microscope. The tiny, moving particles seen on the screen (right) are submicron size titanium dioxide particles from a drop of white paint diluted in water and placed on a microscope slide. The magnification was 1000x.
- Get the students to guess what they are seeing before you tell them anything. Invariably, many will guess that they are living organisms, the same mistake that Brown made in his original observations over 150 years ago.
