“Andromeda” has been circling in smaller circles on TikTok for months. It remained popular among the indie girl, “I’m so sad” crowd because of the dream-like quality of the instrumentals, not to mention Weyes Blood’s ethereal vocals and wistful lyrics. When I sit here in my room, with the headphones you gifted me for my birthday slung over my ears, I feel like I’m floating. You once told me that her choir teacher wouldn’t give her any solos because her voice was “too different” and I laughed, because how could someone sit in the presence of such a gift and spurn it. You laughed back and said “we should kick him in the balls.” The lyrics to Andromeda are not particularly kind, not wistful or hopeful, but stare straight into the truth of the moment and allow it to be what it is. I feel that way now, when I remember how your eyes looked when you were gasping for air after laughing too hard at our favorite movie, how your fingers curved into mine the first time we held hands. It hurts to be without you, but I can look at the truth of us and accept it for what it is. “Love is calling,” she says. “It’s time to let it through, find a love that will make you, I dare you to try.” I don’t know if she’s talking to you or to me, I can’t tell if she’s talking to the both of us. I think this is a love that calls us, a love that will make us, I hope.
