LAWRENCE J. STEWART earned his B.S. degree at Ball State University, M.M degree at Northwestern University, and the DMA in Bassoon Performance at the University of Michigan. He received a diploma from the Berkshire Music Festival at Tanglewood, Massachusetts and performed in the Marcel Moyse Chamber Music Seminar in Marlboro, Vermont. His bassoon training includes study with Homer Pence, Leonard Sharrow, Sherman Walt, Wilbur Simpson, Louis Skinner, Sol Schoenbach, Lewis Hugh Cooper, John Schamliam, and Bernard Garfield.
As a PROFESSIONAL BASSOONIST, Dr. Stewart has been a member of the Chicago Little Symphony, the National Symphony (Washington, D.C.), the Interlochen (Michigan) Arts Academy Woodwind Quintet, the Western Michigan University Woodwind Quintet, and the Kapelle Woodwind Trio. The Kapelle trio appeared throughout the East coast and on Philadelphia radio and television., receiving annual grants from the New Jersey Endowment for the Arts.
As bassoonist in the KAPELLE WOODWIND TRIO, Dr. Stewart appeared in Carnegie Recital Hall, which prompted New York Times critic, Peter Davis, to write…. “the performances were polished to the letter, musically alert, sensitively inflected, admirably integrated and full of character. They displayed more than sufficient technical expertise and tonal suavity to suggest that they could just as easily pursue solo careers.”
As a member of the NATIONAL SYMPHONY (Washington, D.C.) he performed under such world-renowned conductors as Leonard Bernstein and Arthur Fiedler. At the time of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination, he performed with the Symphony in the Washington nationally televised Memorial Concert.
THE OPERA COMPANY OF PHILADELPHIA has granted him tenured status as orchestral bassoonist. In this capacity, Dr. Stewart had the pleasure to perform numerous telecasts with noted tenor, Luciano Pavarotti— once in “La Boheme”, seen nationwide which drew the largest opera audience in the history of the Public Broadcasting Service, and went on to win an Emmy Award as the year’s Outstanding Classical Program and, again, in “Luciano Pavarotti in Concert at the Spectrum” (Verdi Requiem). In the entertainment realm, he counts orchestral performances with Ray Charles, Jose Greco, Jack Benny, Tony Bennett, and Tony Randall.
Dr. Stewart appeared as First Bassoonist with the Concerto Soloists of Philadelphia in a nationally televised production (“All Bach/Handel Double Reed Choir Concert”) with narration by actor Tony Randall.
As a PROMINENT FREE LANCE MUSICIAN in the Tri-State area, he performs with the Wayne (PA) Oratorio Society, the Festival Orchestra (Jim Thorpe, PA), Kennett Symphony (Kennett Square, PA), Delaware Symphony, Orchestra Society of Philadelphia, the Concerto Soloists Chamber Orchestra, Encore Chamber Players (/Flourtown, PA), Academy of Vocal Arts Orchestra (Philadelphia), Pennsylvania Ballet, Paul Roberts Singers (Philadelphia), and the Philadelphia Chamber Chorus Orchestra.
Prior to joining the FACULTY at Rowan, Dr. Stewart served as professor of bassoon on the faculties of Western Michigan University, the Interlochen Arts Academy, the Interlochen Summer Music Camp, the University of Wisconsin Summer Music Clinic, and the University of Indiana Music Summer School.
His study of ACOUSTICAL REPAIR with Lewis Hugh Cooper led him to be selected to acoustically repair the Kroner Bassoons for the Custom Music Company in Royal Oak, Michigan. Dr. Stewart maintains his acoustical repair interest by regular consultation with John Shamlian, former bassoonist with the Philadelphia Orchestra.
Currently, at ROWAN UNIVERSITY, he teaches Bassoon, Music Theory, has coordinated the Music Theory Program, coordinates the Woodwind area, and performs in the Rowan Baroque Ensemble and Rowan Woodwind Quintet.
Recently, Dr.
Stewart recorded all seven audtion bassoon solos
with accompanments on one CD,
with performance
suggestions included. The CD package was sent to all Instrumental Directors
in New Jersey.
