Q1: What is NJ GEAR UP?

NJ GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) offers educational support and assistance to middle and high school students to help them prepare for and enroll in a college or university.

 

Q2: What’s a Mentor?

A mentor is a caring adult who agrees to spend time with a young person to help him or her make good decisions about life.

 

Q3: What does a NJ GEAR UP Mentor do?

A NJ GEAR UP mentor share his/her college experience to show the importance of saying in school and the hard work it takes.

 

Q4: Who can become a NJ GEAR UP Mentor?

Anyone who is a college student enrolled either part-time or full-time.

 

Q5: What do mentors get from the relationship?

Mentors can gain satisfaction and fulfillment by working with GEAR UP student who need their help. In addition mentor will be paid an hourly wage.

 

Q6: How often do NJ GEAR UP Mentors and
        GEAR UP students meet?

Mentors and students meet for at lease five hours a week. This time is flexible.

 

Q7: How long am I required to stay with the program?

Mentors make an initial six-month commitment.

 

Q8: What activities will a NJ GEAR UP Mentor participate in?

Mentors will participate in CHAMP activities such as college visits, school tutoring, and Saturday academic instruction. Mentors will also participate in student reward activities such as skiing, bowling, and skating.

Q10: How old are GEAR UP student?

GEAR UP students are 12-18 years old.

 

Q11: Why must I undergo a criminal background check?

It is to protect NJ GEAR UP students from adults who might harm them or have an adverse affect on the program.

 

Q12: What are the characteristics of a good mentor?

A good mentor is someone who is responsible, patient, persistent, a good listener, reliable and consistent.

 

Q13: What happens if I transfer to a different
            college or university?

You are allowed to continue the mentoring relationships depending upon your time.
