Political Advocacy in Health Promotion
Why should health promotion professionals get involved in political activity? We should because the health of the nation, funding for health promotion programs, and viability of our careers depends upon it. Health promotion received only a small fraction of the federal budget that medicine receives, yet it is the key to solving many of the most pressing health problems faced by the U.S. today. Why does health promotion receive so little federal funding? The answer lies in the fact that health promotion professionals have not advocated for this funding in an organized and effective way.

The good news is that health promotion organizations are beginning to advocate for funding more frequently and more effectively. One group in particular, Health Promotion Advocates, Inc., has provided a simple way for health promotion professionals and organizations to advocate for more funding of programs and research in an effective, coordinated way. Please visit the website, www.healthpromotionadvocates.org, to learn how you can be involved.
