Course Guides

Here are some guides to help you with your assignments:

- How to write criticism (for your critical essays)

- How to do your term project

- Your event reports

- Your in-class report

- How to prepare for class

The following two essays will give you an orientation to philosophy, and to the philosophy of the arts. For more, click the "topic questions" link on the menu to the left.

- What do philosophers do?

- What is the philosophy of art (or, aesthetics)?

- Is art universal?

There are many resources to which you can turn for help in thinking about issues in philosophical aesthetics, and for a better understanding of the views of some of the authors we will read. Some are listed in the Bibliography section. A quick, easy and excellent first place to look for any question about philosophy is the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, available free online. Just Google it and you'll find it.

Here are links to the music examples for Langer:

Ravel: Jeux d'eau

Bach: Toccata, Adagio and Fugue in C major.
