February 8, 1827, Cyrus sells above lot for $400 to Oliver Crosby.

Resident of Lincoln, Atkinson, Jackson, ME then Connecticut. Died from a fall on the ice.

Written from Vernon, CT when Cyrus & Hepzibah arrived with Julia to live with children Samuel (probably first to move to CT), William, Hannah, Charles, George, Brainard and Mary Ann. At this time Asa, Nathan and Erastus were in California panning for gold; Kezia was married and living in Maine; presume Henry was living with Kezia.

CYRUS married 6, 7 HEPZIBAH HUNT PAGE [scrapbook] 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 daughter of NATHAN PAGE and HEPZIBAH HUNT on Jan 10 1823 in Jackson Maine. HEPZIBAH was born 8 on Mar 25 1802. She died 9, 10 on Feb 22 1886 in East Douglas, MA. She was buried 11 in Elmwood Cemetery, Vernon, CT.

42. Benjamin Johnson [scrapbook] 1 (BOARDMAN , BENJAMIN , ASA , TIMOTHY , TIMOTHY , JOHN ) was born 2, 3, 4, 5 on Jun 14 1802 in York, Maine. He died 6 on Nov 20 1869 in Dover, ME. He was buried 7 in Dover Cemetery, sec 1. Benjamin resided in Frankfort, Waldo County, ME.

In 1841 Dr. Johnson occupied the home known as the Joseph B. & Francis C Peaks (descendents of Dr. J.'s second wife) on East Main St., in Dover, having taken over the residence from the former owner, Dr. Jonathan A. Smith. In 1845 Dr. Johnson deeded his former house and land on which it stood in Frankfort to Webster Kelley. In the U.S. Census for 1850 he is found in Dover, Piscataquis County, Maine. (Acct Book of B Johnson, 1827-1841, Introduction by Madeline Ellingwood MacDonald, March 16, 1993)

From 1841 Diary of Cyrus Johnson:
"Fri 4 June 1841, cool & fair
... Brother Benjamin was here on his way to Dover."

Elected Trustee of Foxcroft Academy, October 21, 1846; in 1842: was one of 15 men who agreed to make up any deficiency in the $450 salary for Rev. Wooster Parker, installed to the Congregational Church at Foxcroft on 11/9/1842; in 1851: purchased 2 shares, $25 ea, stock for a "site and for building a house" (Cong. Parish of Foxcroft). (Sprague's Journal of Maine History, 1917, v5, p110)

Obituary: oldest Holyoke Alumna at death in 1939; taught a few years, but retired several years before the Civil War; lived "a very quiet life"; many years lived with brother Seth in NY and after his death (circa 1929) moved to Butler Hall; survived by nieces Mrs. William L. Hope Simpson (15 E 69th St) and Mrs. John A. Topping (116 E. 68th St), two grand-nephews Wellington Hope Simpson and Edgar Hope Simpson, and cousin Miss Elizabeth R. Wellington. In interview (3 years earlier) said, "Life has been very kind to me. I have been blessed with good health and have seen unbelievable progress in the world. I remember the days of hoop skirts, ridiculous things. Once I went to church wearing a fashionable hoop. Several persons were in the pew when I started to go in and it was such close quarters that up went the hoop over the end of the seat." Active until her death. Benjamin married 1 (2) Eliza Bacon daughter of James Bacon Capt. and Rhoda on Jul 24 1854. Eliza was born 2 on Dec 22 1816. She died 3, 4 on Jun 1 1891. She was buried 5 in Dover Cemetery, sec 1.

Eliza Chadbourne was a widow with two young children when she came to Dover to visit her sister, Joan Bacon (b. 1805) who was married to Dea. John Gould Mayo (esq) . There she met and married widower Dr. Benjamin Johnson.

"In 1817, at the age of 14, he was engaged in land surveying in Vermont, and in 1818, assisted his father in the survey of the northeastern boundary line between the United States and British Provinces. At the age of 18, he became "teacher of arithmetic and geometry" in the military academy of Captain Partridge, at Norwich, VT, and later, "instructor in civil engineering, mathematics, and tactics".... He was one of the first and ablest advocated of railway construction in this country, and the pioneer engineer in this untried path." "...40 yrs resident Middletown Conn...mayor 1856-57, State Senator same time, 1862 called to Washington DC in consultation w/ president and secretary of war on the then situation....offered but declined a general's commission and a command in the Southwest, and later a position of asst sect'dy of war. Author of many professional works, numerous scientific, philosophical, and political papers, and contributed to reviews and journals." (History of Middlesex County 1635-1885, pub. 1888)

"The unsigned and undated oil portrait acquired from the descendants of Edwin Johnson is significant for several reasons. The skillfully painted oil portrait, taken about 1825, is an excellent example of early 19th century American portraiture. . . . . Furthermore, the Johnson portrait is the earliest known image showing the distinctive Norwich dress uniform designed by Alden Partridge. . . ."
Apparently the portrait was donated in 1998, about the time of the article. (Fall 1998 Norwich University article; research courtesy of Bill Minnick, Feb 2004)
