Inspiration for DisConnect
Sherry Turkle, author of Alone Together: Why We Expect More from Technology and Less From Each Other, has noticed a trend where people are escaping from face-to-face interaction and moving towards digital communication. Technology has reinforced the belief that we can pay attention to what we want, when we want, for just as long as we want. We created communication technology in the hopes that it would bring people closer together. Instead, we are using these tools to keep others at a comfortable distance. When we send an email or a text message, we feel like we are participating in the social world, but the meaning behind our words is often lost in translation.
After watching Sherry Turkle's Ted Talk from 2012, we really began to form our ideas for DisConnect.
