The semester-long project this year is to design, build, and test a crane arm using a small amount of aluminum and plastic bar stock, plus a few other things. The crane will lift 400 lbs in 4 seconds to a height of 2 feet. Students also design, build, and test a device to time the lift.
Don't start cutting and drilling your aluminum and plastic pieces until given the go ahead in class.
You will be able to test your crane by installing it on the crane substructure and lifting a relatively light weight. The reason for doing this is to check that your design is compatible with the crane substructure (see advice). You will NOT be able to test your crane with "competition" weights before the competition.
We won't anticipate every contingency (just like a real-world-project!), so from time to time, clarifications will be posted here.
- The following barstock is available: 1" x 0.25", 1.25" x 0.25" and 1.5" x 0.25". The same widths are also available in 0.5" thick stock. We can get 0.75" widths, but you must request them by Oct. 30.
- You are encouraged to bring your own tools to the crane testing event, e.g., wrenches, rubber mallets, etc.
- You are only allowed to use supplied materials and equipment. This means EVERY part of your crane. You must use the supplied motor, base, barstock, bolts, pulleys, cable,...
Constructed devices and engineering drawings do not always match, so check the dimensions of the crane bases!

AutoCAD Tutorial - work all six tutorials and you will be AutoCAD ready!
To do the AutoCAD tutorial, you need to save the AutoCAD file "Startpage" to your drive. From the tutorial or Sophomore Clinic website, right click on Startpage and "Save Target as" to the location best for you.
The tutorial was designed for AutoCAD 2000i. We've found it works well with later versions of AutoCAD; hwoever, some commands and layouts may be different.
